Slowly Back to Normal

Jared continues to improve very rapidly. He is eating very well and needs so much of it. We are not sure how much weight this kid has lost, but he is a skinny dude. We are trying to beef him up as fast as we can.

He is gaining his strength back each day. He is walking more and just doing more on his own, which I'm sure is helpful to his morale. His confidence in his neck and it's strength are returning which makes us more and more comfortable about having the brace off. He only wore it for about 30 minutes today.

Another major milestone was the amount of times that we got him to smile today. He is slowly regaining his spirits back. His voice is very soft and a bit nasal right now and I think he is a bit uncomfortable with all of it, but he really sounds great and will pull out of all of this and slip back into the normal routine and forget that a lot of it ever happened. He already doesn't remember the breathing tube which is a miracle in and of itself.

Jaime's brother Dave and his wife Jenn drove all the way from Washington D.C. to spend some time with us. It was really a lot of fun to sit down and talk with them this afternoon. It really is great to have company and especially when we would never have imagined having any at all. Their son Brooks is the cutest little guy and is a ball of energy. It is going to be great to spend this weekend with them.

Just another day in paradise. Love you all.

  2. Ty keeps telling me how great Jared looks...and that he doesn't even have to have any tubes in him.

I think it brings much relief for these little ones to see him looking like Jared rather than a patient in the hospital. Hope things go smoothly this next week and we can see you real soon. Tell Jared we love him and he is looking so good.

  3. Jared looks great!! Jenn and I (along with Brooks) arrived in Pittsburgh yesterday and have been so impressed with how good Jared looks. He is walking, eating, and even managing to give an occasional smile through it all. What an impressive kid! We are honored to be his relatives!!

  4. Jared,We love seeing you because each day you are getting stronger and you are doing so good. What a handsome grandson and what an example of putting up with all the tubes, sticks, etc. from Doctors and nurses. You are our hero...Grandma Beck

  5. It is now Sunday night; Jenn, Brooks, and myself will be heading back to DC in the morning. I just wanted to convey what a wonderful weekend this has been for us. Jaime and Andrew are tremendous individuals and parents. Not only are they great examples of faith, love, and strength, but they also have a tremendous realness about them (what you see is what you get) that is so endearing. Although this experience will undoubtedly forever change them, it has not changed who they are. Andrew is still the "big-kid" that all the grandkids want to play with--he spent the evening building block towers for Brooks to push over. Jaime is still her gracious self--far more concerned about the comfort and happiness of others than her own--even during this difficult time. Jared is resilient. He has been through more in the last 9 days than any of us can comprehend and must be exhausted, yet he repeatedly left his room and came to the lobby where Brooks could see him. That meant so much to us; we really appreciate it. We are proud of you Jared, and are anxious to see you again soon.
    Love Dave, Jenn, and Brooks
